Nevada Marriage License Info
|
After you decide to get married in the state of Nevada, it will be necessary for you and your partner to get a marriage license and other things done. To apply for a marriage license in Nevada, you can usually go to any clerk office within the county your wedding ceremony will take place. These clerk offices are located inside the county probate court or the circuit court.
There is a one time fee for the marriage license; between $35 and $42. These fees vary from county to count and only cash payments are accepted. There is no need for you or your partner to be previous or current residents of Nevada to get a marriage license that is valid through out the state. Once you pay for the marriage license, there is no waiting period, so you will receive it right away. Once you get the marriage license, you can get married right away.
The legal age to get married without parental consent in Nevada is 18. You must bring a birth certificate to prove you are of legal age. If you or your partner is under the legal age of 18, the legal guardians or parents will have to be present. If for some reason a parent or legal guardian can’t be present due to death, divorce, separation or another circumstance, proper evidence will need to be presented for verification purposes. No one under the age of 16 is allowed to get married without a court order.
Blood tests or physical exams are not necessary for your or your partner to get a marriage license in Nevada. One year after you receive your Nevada marriage license, it will expire. If you or your partner were previously married, but is now divorced or widowed, the date of divorce or death will need to be given. After the wedding ceremony, a change of last names will need to take place. You will be given a marriage certificate after the ceremony of marriage; this will serve as proof that you have been wedded legally in the state of Nevada. It is a piece of paper that will prove you have been married and can legally change your last name. This paper will need to be presented to government agencies, such as social security and the motor vehicle office. You will also need to present this to non government institutions like your employer, banks, credit card companies and memberships (others will need to see it as well).
Available to you is the legal name change kit. This has all of the paperwork necessary to successfully legally change your last name. These forms can be completed before or after the wedding ceremony, but it would be much more convenient if done before the marriage ceremony.
Marriages that are not allowed in Nevada include common law marriages, same sex marriages, cousin marriages or proxy marriages.
When deciding to get married in Nevada, it is a great idea to plan ahead and get as much paperwork and legal work out of the way. Try to get the marriage license a month or so before the wedding, instead of waiting until the last minute and fill out the name change information before you get married, so that afterwards all you have to do is have it filed.
